Dreaming

Dreams have always been a mystery throughout history. There have been many theories about why we dream. Some believe that dreams are messages from the unconscious mind to the conscious, guiding us and leading us down the right path. Others think dreams are simply random with no real meaning.

Some even suggest that dreams are prophetic, sent by higher powers. When it comes to understanding dreams, everyone’s guess is as valid as the next. Dream interpretation and symbolism are popular topics, with certain dreams deeply embedded in our culture. Yet, dreams remain a mystery to scientists. What is their purpose, if any? Why do we dream at all?

Researchers are only beginning to understand the role of sleep and dreaming. Some suggest dreams serve no actual function, while others believe dreaming is crucial for our mental, emotional, and physical health. Ernest Hoffman, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Newton Wellesley Hospital, speculates that one possible (though unproven) function of dreams is to integrate new experiences into our memory, reducing emotional stress and helping us cope with trauma or stressful events.
